The Belford Hospital is the second such building to serve the people of Lochaber and was built in 1963. However, much has changed since then and the hospital now provides a wide range of secondary acute services. Our Accident and Emergency department, for instance, treats a much higher percentage of trauma cases than most hospitals, due to the proximity of the mountains and the number of tourists who engage in outdoor sports throughout the year.
The Belford Hospital is highly valued by our local community and has achieved a number of national credits for the quality of our services.
Staffed by exceptionally friendly and competent staff, the hospital provides the following principal services:
-
A consultant led medical ward, which also treats acute cardiac and stroke cases.
-
A consultant led general surgical ward, with a High Dependency Unit and childrens suite.
-
Cancer treatment, including surgery, chemotherapy and MacMillan Nursing.
-
A cardiac unit, led by a trained technician, for patient assessment and pre discharge planning.
-
A well equipped theatre and a separate endoscopy suite; we also provide a weekly outreach service to the McKinnon Memorial Hospital at Broadford on Skye.
-
An accident and emergency department, equipped from minor injuries to major resuscitation; the department is one of the busiest mountain trauma units in Europe.
-
A five room out-patients department, catering for most specialities
-
An X-Ray department with two modern general X-Ray rooms, fluoroscopy, screening, ultrasound and a new CT scanner. The department has electronic links to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness for rapid assessment of images.
-
A laboratory equipped with the best of modern analysers, a blood bank and phlebotomy service.
-
A pharmacy service led by a clinical pharmacist.
Our doors are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week but, to augment our services, there is also an out of hours service provided by our local GP practices.
